The thorn in the project would be the expected selling price of USD 40000. The Chevy Volt is not a hybrid by definition set by Society Of Automotive Engineers (SAE) because a hybrid vehicle shall have "two or more energy storage systems both of which must provide propulsion power, either together or independently". Since the Volt's combustion engine is not connected to the wheels in any manner hence it can't wear a hybrid badge. GM coined the term to describe a new class of vehicles similar in concept to the Volts. It is called "Extended Range Electric Vehicle" or a plug-in series hybrid. At present the Volt can travel up to 40 miles (64 km) on a full battery charge after which the combustion engine will kick in to provide electricity for the car to travel another 300 miles (483 km).
